HOA’s Harm
We represent a group of current and prior HOA resident/owners. We are also highly educated and experienced in-life. We come from diverse career-fields: law, literature, linguistics, psychology, business management. Each of us has extensive experience with HOA living, governance and with various aspects of the HOA-Industry. Our view of HOA’s is decidedly critical, from the sociological and psychological perspectives. Our core concerns are with the long-term quality-of-life in HOA’s and how this impacts the health and well-being of resident/owners. We see this as wholly consistent with similar concerns developing acress our Nation today. We view HOA’s as a highly specific housing choice. Some buyers have prior knowledge of problematic HOA issues; many do not. HOA’s themselves and the HOA-Industry portray HOA’s in very dream-like, idyllistic terms. For resident/owners who are accustomed to the American ideals of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, “democracy” and “free speech”, HOA reality is something quite different. In reality, we believe HOA’s are quasi-governments, conceived for the primary purposes of control and profit, using the structures of corporate law. Corporate law is ideally suited for the introduction of a non-human “legal” entity into the housing market. Herein lies one essential problem of HOA’s: Housing is a highly “emotional” and “personal” human choice. Placing home-choice within the corporate sphere, puts it at very high and, we believe, inevitable risk of harmful manipulation by power/control seeking individuals/groups. Our GOAL: Changing HOA’s to make them more democratic, humane and responsive to the needs of resident-owners. Or, eliminating them! We do not purport to have all or “the best” answers to how this change can be brought about. We have NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER, that HOA’s do harm human health and that they MUST be changed for the sake of future human health and welfare. Next….SITE CONTENTS
